Pet, by Catherine Chidgey.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. The story seemed to unfold at a pace necessary to convey how intentional, deep, and gradual the momentum of manipulation is when it comes to power dynamics and abuse. Delving into friendship, girlhood, childhood, all the confusion that wraps around them, and the extent we’ll push our boundaries in order to be accepted and called a friend, it reminded me that none of us—no matter the age—are too far away from that web of victimhood or survival. A couple of the reviews describe Pet as “haunting,” and they’re correct: haunting, shiver-inducing, and unforgettable. A wonderful read.
